Meet Lauryn, One of Our SAP Bill McDermott Scholarship Winners

Congratulations to one of this year’s SAP Bill McDermott Scholarship Winners! Here, Lauryn, a 12th grader from Louisiana who was awarded $7,500, shares more about her experience receiving the scholarship and her plans for college.

In partnership with SAP, The SAP Bill McDermott Scholarship is offered to students in GENYOUth programs each year to provide funding for postsecondary education. As part of her scholarship application, Lauryn shared how she overcame adversity during a sports injury and supported her team throughout the season. Lauryn is a member of GENYOUth's flagship program, Fuel Up to Play 60, the largest in-school health and wellness program in the country, developed by the National Football League and National Dairy Council, in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

This scholarship is meaningful to me because it gave me the opportunity to express one of the defining moments of my high school basketball career. This scholarship enabled me to share my story and gave me the platform to encourage people who share a similar story to never give up when adversity is at hand; When you fall down seven times, you stand up eight!

Key things that I learned about myself were my love for helping others and how I have some things I could work on to better myself as a leader. I say this because there are hundreds of students I meet every year at Summit and I am amazed at their skill sets and what they bring to the program. I learned that these ambassadors constantly push me to be a better leader in my school, community, and throughout my life. My love for helping others has grown tremendously with the Fuel Up to Play 60 Program. My involvement as Youth Council Member with setting up the summits before the kids arrive and seeing their smiles light up the room in enjoyment brings tears to my eyes for the simple fact that I have the opportunity to help these great ambassadors further their love for this program.

In college, I would like to pursue a career in the medical field majoring in Biology Pre-Med. My continuous involvement with the Fuel Up to Play 60 Program has enhanced my leadership skills, public speaking skills, and also my knowledge on physical fitness and healthy eating. It also brought me to the realization of how much I genuinely love helping people. With my love for science, this program has influenced me to pursue a career in the medical field to become a doctor. In this way, I will be able to help my patients and give them sufficient ways on how they need to take care of their bodies in order to lead a healthy lifestyle.
